Believing in Yourself

I believe I have a destiny and a purpose. Do you? The quote that our purpose in life is to find our purpose, is very true.

John F. Kennedy once said,
As we express our gratitude, we must never forget that the highest appreciation is not to utter words, but to live by them.

Living by what you “utter” must be one of the hardest things to do. People who don’t are usualy referred to as hypocrites. In many ways everyone on this planet is a bit of hypocrite, yet in many ways, I think we can be hypocrites by habit, not even knowing.

It doesn’t work if I don’t believe in it.

I meet plenty of negative people who complain about different issues they face and what they see in the world. I used to be one of those very negative people seeing everyone elses problems except my own. You may know a few people like this too. Whatever their perceived problem or questions about life and work, I try my hardest to give people “actionable advice”. Advice that would help them overcome the challenges they talk about or issues they face.  I usually hear comments that this or that won’t work for me, or, I can’t do that, I am not good enough, I have no money, or I don’t think that is for me. So that's how we forge excuses into limiting beliefs and consequential actions.

However, I think there is a lot more at work here than meets the eye.

Some people are simply determined to fail.

Through people’s responses that I've mentioned here above, there’s often an undertone of self-doubt and lack of confidence. On analysis, I believe the unspoken thought that drives the questions are, “I don’t believe these ideas will work for me.” Or maybe, “I don’t believe I can make these ideas work for me." which is really saying "I don’t believe in myself”.

No matter how large or small ideas are that one is trying to change, the fear or lack of belief in yourself will limit you and the opportunities you are exposed to and so I often question people why they feel or think the way they do.

The biggest difference I've noticed with successful people and high achievers, in health, in business, and in life, is that they are determined to make a situation work for them by being persistent and consistent. They believe in themselves. They find solutions and expect results rather than playing the role of a victim. Victim mentality searches for reasons and then justify's why a situation or idea won’t work.

Of course, I understand that not every idea will work for every person but many ideas can work for most people if you believe that you can make them work. You have to be willing to think differently and to also experiment with new ideas and trust that you’ll discover a way to make them work.

Believing in Yourself !

There are 2 main habits high achievers have according to Darren Hardy of Success magazine.

They are:

  1. Be willing to learn.
  2. Believe that the goals you set can be achieved.

Sometimes goal setting can be a problem because I think we can set goals beyond what we believe we can achieve. Goals have to be realistic and achievable.

We all deal with vulnerability, uncertainty, and failure at times in our lives. Some of us trust that if we move forward anyway, we’ll figure it out. As I’m writing this, I am not where I want to be, but I am definitely not where I was a year or two ago. I am so grateful for what I have learned and the people who've supported me. We have to remember how far we have come, not just how far we have to go. You may not be where you want to be, but you’re definately not where you used to be.

I didn’t know what I was going to do when I lost my professional job in 2012. At my age, it’s almost impossible to get a job in Switzerland in my profession - Landscaper. I pulled myself together, took Robert Kiyosaki's advice and employed a Transitional life coach. I started my journey of self-education. I was able to figure it all out and I am sure you can too.

I started a landscaping business called GardenPro with resources I had at my disposal. Sounds awesome right? I could be my own boss and the business would make me some money. At the time I felt I wasn’t really qualified to run a business but I had the technical ability to do so and so I trusted and believed in myself that I would figure it out anyway. It has been a massive learning curve for me. I knew nothing of marketing, sales and the 5 other main skills it takes to actually run a successful small business. You can find out more about that journey in my Small Business Report.

That’s how Richard Branson figured it out. Most successful people figure it out and you can too.  Richard Branson quotes,

"If somebody offers you an amazing opportunity but you are not sure you can do it, say yes – then learn how to do it later."

I believed in myself. I didn’t have confidence. Confidence came with experience but it’s the attitude towards believing that made the difference. Just a simple belief in myself. Learn it and do it and confidence soon arrives on your doorstep with each success. With each failure we learn and grow towards success.

Do you believe change is possible for you?

One of the fundamental beliefs in the communities I am involved with is that you can become better at what you do. We believe it’s possible to improve. Raise the bar in your own life, even if others around you accept average as normal. Growth means you will have a better tomorrow. We believe in ourselves and in each other. We believe that if you want better health or more happiness or a more meaningful job that you can make those things happen.

Because of what we believe, we are willing to test, experiment, and try new things even when we feel uncertain and lack confidence. If you don’t believe that it’s possible to make new things work, then it’s going to be hard to make any progress. I don’t care how good your ideas are, nothing will work for you if you don’t believe in it. And more importantly, nothing will work for you if you don’t believe in yourself.

Here’s a great example how surrounding yourself with positive people can affect your performance and belief in yourself. The results are incredible.
